Texas Gulf Coast Electrical JATC
Texas Gulf Coast Electrical JATC is a non-profit organization that provides men and women with the opportunity to “earn while you learn.” In collaboration with the IBEW and NECA, we have produced hundreds of qualified electricians since 1942. Through on the job training as well as classroom training, apprentices have the opportunity of receiving certifications as an Inside Wireman (Construction) Electrician.
Nature of the Work- An electrician must be able to assemble, install, repair or work on entire systems; whether it be in a residential home, a school, a refinery, an electrical generation facility, street lights, traffic lights, alarms, computers, telephone systems and all other facets of the industry. He must be able to navigate in a dynamic industry that could require him to learn specialized skills and obtain additional certifications.
Term of Apprenticeship
- 5 years on the job training (8000 hours)
- 5 years classroom training (1000 hours)
- First six (6) months is a probationary period
- Credit may be granted for previous experience in the Electrical Construction
Wages- Apprentice are paid a percentage of journeyman hourly rate, with periodic pay increases (approximatley every 6 months, 3-5% increase) based on hours worked, and related instruction. Current starting wage with no experience is close to $14 an hour.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age, be a high school graduate or have a GED and one credit of Algebra 1.
- Physically capable of doing construction work
- If you do not meet the algebra requirement, you can fulfill this requirement by gaining an approved credit of algebra, or complete the NJATC Tech Math Online Course which can be accessed at http://www.electricaltrainingalliance.org/learning/onlinetechmath
- All applicants who are accepted into the Apprenticeship program will have a drug screen and may be required to take a physical exam which will include color blindness.
- Diploma/GED and Algebra requirements can be bypassed with 4,000 documented hours of work in the electrical construction

- Valid Driver’s License/State ID

- GED Certificate (if applicable)
- College transcript (if applicable)
- Documented Experience (if applicable)
- Veterans- DD214 as proof of service (if applicable)
- Proof of experience in Electrical Construction (if applicable)
School- Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday nights, starting after Labor Day, and continue until the end of May. Apprentices are required to attend all classes. Apprentices are responsible for the books and registration fees for each school year.
State License-In order to work as an apprentice Electrician in the state of Texas, you must have a state Apprentice License. You must have a license in order to go to work.

Requirements
An honorably discharged military veteran who completed military technical training school in a (MOS) applicable to the electrical construction industry (as determined by the JATC), and can document a minimum of two (2) years of military experience in that MOS, may qualify for either direct interview or direct entry (must apply within five (5) years from MOS experience). Provide reliable documentation and adequate verification (DD-214).If not using military experience---High School diploma or GED with one (1) credit of high school algebra,(an official high school transcript to verify), drivers license or state ID.
