Security Officer Shift Lead

Job Summary and Qualifications

The Shift Lead Security Officer supervises and functions as a role model for other security officers, provides a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, medical staff, employees, and their property, and ensures the security of the buildings and property of the hospital. 

What will you do in this role: 

- Plans, schedules, and directs all assignments of security officers on his/her shift and provides instruction for any special duties required in addition to regular duties. 
- Maintains administrative and operational control of the assigned shift. 
- In the absence of the Director of Security, the Shift Leader is responsible as the on-duty supervisor for the security dept. 
- Enforces adherence to all policies and procedures, record and report any disciplinary issues. 
- Recommends staffing, training and equipment needs. 
- Reviews the daily activity reports for content and accuracy of the security officers under his/her supervision. 
- Maintains a weekly log of shift activities and submit to the Director of Security a weekly written report on all departmental shift activity. 
- Submits a daily report of unusual incidents that occur during his/her assigned shift. 
- Reviews daily / weekly activity reports for the purpose of maintaining monthly statistics, and submit a monthly statistical report as required by the Director of Security. 
- Instructs shift personnel in office procedures as outlined by the Director of security.
- Reviews payroll / timesheets for officers under his/her supervision. 
- Keeps records for use in completing subordinate performance evaluations, and training requirements. 
- Refers unusual or complex situations to the Director of Security. 
- Conducts regularly-scheduled patrols of Hospital buildings and grounds, checking all doors, windows, alarms and firefighting equipment (extinguishers, etc.). 
- Patrols employee parking lot and garage areas to ensure safety of employees. 
- Documents all activity including rounds in the Security Log. 
- Prepares online incident occurrence reports as needed. 
- Responds to emergency situations including all codes; Code Amber, Black, Blue, Gray, Green, Red, Orange, Purple, Silver, Yellow, White and Condition H, in addition to any other Hospital Code or stat situation. 
- Assists authorized employees and physicians requiring access to certain hospital areas. 
- Assists with the lifting and transportation of deceased persons and their property to the hospital morgue. 
- Provides release of deceased persons and their property after obtaining proper authorization from hospital supervisor. 
- Maintains precise “chain of custody” records in this matter. 
- Coordinates with the Mom’s Place for all infant and fetal demise issues. 
- Maintains radio communication via two way radio with hospital switchboard and other security officers and responds to requests made by the switchboard on behalf of patients, employees, physicians and visitors. 
- Provides courtesy escorts 24-7 to employees, patients, visitors when requested. 
- Responds in an efficient and professional manners when responding to disasters, fire drills, fires and other emergency situations. 
- Ensures confidentiality of senior management, patient information and Hospital matters. 
- Maintains good communications, and establishes and maintains positive working relationships with employees, senior management, media and the public. 
- Exercises care in the operation and use of equipment and reference materials. 
- Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continuing functioning of equipment. 
- Maintains work areas in a clean, safe and organized manner. 
- Responsible for the efficient handling of patient valuables and lost and found items. 
- Follows established procedure on maintenance and tracking of patient valuables and lost and found property. 
- Responsible for the proper handling and securing of items that may or may not be of evidentiary value in the furtherance of any criminal or internal investigation, ensuring that the proper chain of custody is followed and documented. 
- Performs similar or related duties as assigned. 
- Must be available to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays, filling in when absences occur. 

What qualifications you will need:

  • High School Graduate / GED required
  • 1 or more years of hospital security experience preferred.
  • IAHHS Basic Security Officer Certification must be obtained within 6 months of employment start date.
  • Certifications for issued equipment (handcuffs, O.C. spray, taser) must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
